![]() It's great if you like Porsches, but for everyone else it's an adjustment. When all is said and done, limiting a Need for Speed title to a single brand of cars is not necessarily a good thing. However, maybe we should take a closer look at this next issue. Of course, buying and selling parts, tinkering with spanners, and cop evasion will feature heavily in the game, as will a new 'persistent economy' - making Porsche 2000 sound more like Elite on wheels than the no-brain racer we've come to know and love. If you keep delivering cars on time, you'll find you can retain your job well into your frail dotage as the millennium looms ever nearer. Time doesn't stand still in Porsche 2000 either and as the years roll by, new models of Porsche hit the streets. ![]() ![]() The more races you win, the better the car you can afford to drive. To supplement your income, you can buy yourself (in Porsche terms) a banger and go racing at weekends, Gran TUrismo-style. Scratch the paintwork however, and it's back to mine-clearing duty among the ruins of Berlin. Do well and a promotion to drive ever more valuable and powerful cars to their prospective buyers is yours. You'll notice, as with the last NFS game, Road Challenge, that sequential numbers have ceased to be an issue in the series, which is a shame because apart from just modelling cars from the one manufacturer, this time around there are a number of new features that make it worthy of slapping a big red '5' on the box when the game arrives late next month.Īpart from the usual race modes and a range of cars (from the '48 Roadster to the latest 966 Turbo model) in various shades, Porsche 2000 is taking the venerable Speed series into the land of role-playing.Ĭhoosing the Career Mode, you start the game as a Porsche test driver in 1948 and as well as driving new models around a test track, you have to deliver cars from the plant to their new owners. The fifth in the Need For Speed series is all about Porsches, as is evident by the game's full title: Need For Speed: Porsche 2000. The cars do look good and I think the idea of being based around one car manufacturer is clever, but for me, it does come at a bit of a price. I am sure hardcore fans will notice the difference, but for me, there is not a ton of variety in the way that many of the cars look. The thing is while there are a lot of different models of Porsche in the game, many of them have a very similar design. I am not what you would call a car guy, but I can appreciate a cool looking car. There is a solid line up of game modes to keep you busy. The idea of the evolution mode is that you start out with a 1950 Porsche and work your way up until 2020 which I thought was really cool. This alone to me makes Need For Speed Porsche Unleashed a noteworthy game in the series.Īs well as this you have a regular racing career mode as well and a cool evolution mode. While it is basic by today's standards, this was the first time in the franchise that they had attempted a story mode in their games. The first one I want to talk about though has you trying to become a Porsche factory driver. One of the most impressive aspects of the game is just how many game modes there are.
